After a successful inaugural edition back in May, the Tkaronto Music Festival has announced plans to host another event, TKMF: Presents an Indigenous History Month Celebration, later this month.
The online concert series will see performers iskwē, Old Soul Rebel and James N Wilson broadcasting from the festival's website, Facebook and YouTube on June 24 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. ET. In addition to its musical guests, the fest will also host a poetry performance by Mahlikah Awe:ri. Opening remarks will be provided by Elder Duke Redbird, while actor Glen Gould will serve as the event host.
"Our hope is that Tkaronto Music Festival: Presents will allow the next generation of Indigenous performing artists to be heard far and wide," festival spokesperson Ian Maracle wrote in a statement. "And that the momentum built with our event will carry emerging artists to new career heights while providing established talent with a wider audience than they've had before. We are excited to celebrate Indigenous history month for the first time online!"
The two-hour event comes as a partnership between 50/50 Performing Arts Collective and Ontario Presents.
Previously, TKMF's May event played host to performances by Digging Roots, William Prince, Leela Gilday, The Launch winner Logan Staats, and former A Tribe Called Red members DJ NDN and DJ Shub.
