After making a couple of hefty donations to causes both close to home and further reaching, the Weeknd was thrust back into the spotlight this week when a Republic Records exec revealed that the man born Abel Tesfaye had been in the studio with Daft Punk.

We're still not entirely sure what may have resulted from that particular creative collaboration, but today (August 24) the Toronto-born R&B superstar has teased a snippet of new music.

On Instagram, he uploaded a brief clip of sound that features a brooding electronic beat and lyric-less vocal runs. It was accompanied by a mysterious all-black image, and the caption underneath reveals nothing more than a run-of-the-mill adorable cat emoji.

If it is indeed a preview of a new solo single, it marks the Weeknd's first one-man offering since the release of last year's Beauty Behind the Madness LP, though he has guested on tracks like Future's "Low Life" and Beyoncé's "6 Inch" since.

Listen to the brief audio clip below.
