French artist Sophie Calle has enlisted an impressive roster of performers for a tribute album honouring her late cat, Souris (yes, that means "mouse" in French).
She's released a 37-song album titled Souris Calle, which features contributions from the National, Michael Stipe, Bono, Pharrell, Laurie Anderson, Jarvis Cocker and Fabrizio Moretti of the Strokes.
The list of contributors also includes: AaRON, Juliette Armaner, Matthieu Baillot et Mazarine Pingeot, Alex Beaupain, Benjamin Biolay, Brigitte, Camille, Arnaud Cathrine et Florent Marchet, Jeanne Cherhal, Christophe, Clarika, Pascal Comelade, Lou Doillon, Stephan Eicher et Frédéric Lo, Thomas Fersen, Feu! "When you say you're sad about the cat, it's a bit obscene for people," Calle told Artnet. "You can't say that. I mean, if I say my mother or my father is dead, everyone tells me 'Oh, poor thing, she lost her mother, oh, poor thing, she lost her father,' but if we say that about our cat, we seem ridiculous. It makes me laugh, when for me, in my daily life, it was almost more violent, because I lived with my cat. I didn't live with my parents."
The tribute songs initially debuted at Galerie Perrotin in Paris on October 13, during Calle's ongoing show, which combines the music with videos, texts, photographs and more.
The album itself is now available on black, white and pink vinyl, and the packaging features an assortment of photographs of the late kitty. The standard version is available to order here. A deluxe edition signed by the artist and featuring a wooden frame for the record is available here.
