The Microphones Return for Album of Ambient Background Noise

'Foghorn Tape' contains "no songs, no music," says Phil Elverum

Last year, Phil Elverum revived his beloved band the Microphones for a new album, the single-song epic Microphones in 2020. Now, he's releasing another album from the project — well, kind of. Foghorn Tape is an album of background music that's coming out this week as a vinyl-only release.

A press release explains that this album is "literally just the noisy fuzzed out tape loop of a 'fog horn' (actually a distant pitch-bent bass) that plays throughout the background of The Glow pt. 2 and other Microphones musics."

It will be out on clear vinyl in an edition of 999 copies through the artist's own P.W. Elverum & Sun label. There will be no digital version, and the label explicitly states that it "no songs, no music." It comes out March 5.

If Foghorn Tape is your sort of thing, it's available from the label's shop for $22 USD ($27.75 CAD).
