Vancouver's Jeff Cancade, the musician also known as Devours, is stepping back into the ring under his other handle: the Golden Age of Wrestling. The alternative moniker was created to house Cancade's experimental side project, and he returns to it once again with a new single and video titled "outlaw run."
In a recent statement about the video, Cancade discussed how the pandemic had heightened a struggle that is both individual and collective:
My life fell apart during COVID, and all of my upcoming music is about working through grief and picking up the pieces. The video for "outlaw run" profiles a number of lonely, isolated individuals stripped bare of their loved ones, ruminating on mistakes made in the past, struggling with their mental health. It's basically what I have experienced these past few years, and Vancouver director Medusa Wyatt has created a vision of us struggling alone, yet together.
The video lacks a narrative arc, but this serves Cancade's purposes just fine, as the track and accompanying video capture a specific atmosphere. A sense of powerlessness, ennui and lethargy rise in the chest as the video transports you into the mundane scenes.
Delicate plucking notes and the artist's haunting, unintelligible vocals slowly creep under the skin to plant a growing discomfort. Shots of people in a range of stationary positions abound, suggesting that they are being acted upon rather than acting. This notion could not be more prevalent, as the pandemic has forced an acknowledgement of our ultimate lack of control.
Last May, Cancade made his debut as the Golden Age of Wrestling to deliver Tombstone Piledriver. The project's first and only album so far showcased the artist's invented genre, "glambient," blending chamber singing, ambient music and lush soundscapes.
