Sunny Pompeii

'Vinegar' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished May 27, 2014

In addition to drumming for Said the Whale, multi-instrumentalist Spencer Schoening co-fronts eclectic Vancouver rock band Sunny Pompeii. Their debut album is called Vinegar, and ahead of its June 3 release through Leisure Suite Records, they've offered up the whole thing as a stream.

Beginning with twittering field recordings, opener "Better Half" opens the album with punchy pop rock. Elsewhere on the stylistically diverse LP, cuts like "Sleeplike" and "Clouuuds" are lush folk numbers, the 11-and-a-half-minute "Jessica Sun" includes a noisy prog jam, and "Garbage Island" boosts its hummable melodies with raw, heavy riffs and shouted group vocals.

Hear the album below. Sunny Pompeii will play at Vancouver's Fox Cabaret on June 5 with Weird'eaux and Nouveau Cliché.
