Sunn O)))/Mayhem Offshoot Gravetemple Rerelease 'Ambient/Ruin'

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Mar 1, 2013

Following metal-drone supergroup Gravetemple's 2007 debut The Holy Down, the Sunn O))) offshoot recorded and self-released a follow-up called Ambient/Ruin. The recordings from that 2008 CD-R release are now getting dusted off for double-LP edition via band member Stephen O'Malley's Editions Mego side-label Ideologic Organ, which will release the vinyl package on April 29.

A press release notes that the band— made up of guitarist O'Malley, experimentalist Oren Ambarchi and Mayhem vocalist Attila Csihar — added drummer Matt "Skitz" Sanders for their sophomore set, which found the members tracking their performances apart from each other in Japan, Australia, Israel and France.

The six-song album was put together using live performances, tape collages and field recordings, and is said to refine the band's approach to meshing minimalist noise with drone and black metal. It's further described as a "metaphysical construction of free music and will."

While details weren't given in full, the press release adds that the band will return to stages in April 2013, and that "a new chapter in the ongoing system of the related network" is on the horizon.

For now, you can check out some live clips of Gravetemple over here and here.
