Sufjan Stevens has put out a hell of a lot of music in recent years, and in 2021 alone has released the five-part Convocations and the Angelo de Augustine collab A Beginner's Mind. Now, it appears the ever-adventurous songwriter might be hitting pause, at least for a while.

Speaking with WYNC about A Beginner's Mind, Stevens discussed his many different-sounding projects, explaining that he's often concurrently working on multiple albums. And while he is indeed currently working on new music, he suggested that it might be a while before we hear any of it.

He said, "I'm always working on something, and I always have like three albums just on the sidelines, waiting to happen. But, I think it's time for me to take a break, you know? And step back and just be, and listen."

Then again, this isn't the first time Stevens has said something similar. Last year, Exclaim! interviewed him about his album The Ascension, at which time he explained its lengthy runtime by saying, "It'll probably be another five years before I have another record. So I might as well get as much as I can."
