Sufjan Stevens Reacts to Katy Perry's "Déjà Vu" Lyrics: "LORD JESUS HAVE MERCY"

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jun 14, 2017

A lot of people have been paying attention to Katy Perry's every move as of late, thanks in part to her all-access Big Brother-style 96-hour livestream over the weekend. But in addition to watching her rank her celebrity ex-lovers and reconcile with Taylor Swift, a few people have also been paying attention to the lyrics on her new album, Witness.

Sufjan Stevens seems to have paid particularly close attention to the words on "Déjà Vu," feeling moved enough to dedicate a Tumblr post to the song.

On the record, she sings: "Your words are like Chinese water torture / And there's no finish line, always one more corner."

In response, Stevens writes:

LORD JESUS HAVE MERCY.

And y'all thought it was weird when I wrote, "Tuesday night at the Bible study…."
Lord Jesus.

Katy Perry was probably at THAT SAME BIBLE STUDY.

We probably did popcorn prayer together.

I love this world.

He capped off the post with the tag "ALL RESPECT ALL CAPS."

Perry's Witness was released last week and is available here. Stevens, meanwhile, released a new collaborative album with Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly and James McAllister titled Planetarium on the same day. Pick that up here.
