Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner & Nico Muhly

"Mercury" / "Neptune" / "Jupiter" / "Venus" / "Uranus"

It seems orchestral popster Sufjan Stevens has abandoned making records about states in favour of penning tunes about the planets. We previously reported that a project commissioned Dutch concert hall Muziekgebouw Eindhoven pairs Stevens with the National's Bryce Dessner and avant-garde composer Nico Muhly.

Written for seven trombones and a string quartet, you can now watch the debut performances of the trio's work. At Cinncinatti's MusicNow festival last month, they were joined by the New Trombone Collective and Navarra String Quartet, filling out the spacey sounds. Below, you can watch a handful of the planetary-themed compositions.
