Since forming a band in 1999, Toronto-bred pop rockers Still Life Still have undergone some minor changes, from band members to band names, to ultimately become what they are today - a five-member, super-sounding, high-energy outfit. Their first widely available EP Pastel is set to be released on June 16 on Arts & Crafts, and on top of that, Still Life Still scored a featured spot in Toronto's annual North by Northeast fest, not to mention an in-store performance this Wednesday (June 17).
The Toronto in-store is going down at the Fred Perry Store at 964 Queen St. West starting at 6 p.m., and for the price of free. Yes, Fred Perry is sponsoring the throw-down, but so are we. After all, in our Click Hear on the band last summer, we gave them some pretty big props based solely on their MySpace playlist, writing at the time that we were taken aback by "how consistent a listen the collection of songs are." And even though the band have changed up that playlist significantly during the past year, we could easily say the same thing about what's streaming there now.
Another thing we're going to stand behind is our comparison between Arts & Crafts labelmates Broken Social Scene and Still Life Still, with the upstarts new tracks still holding tight to "heavy layering, incidental background noise, a jammy looseness to the song structures [and] melodies buried six feet under occasional and lackadaisical experimentation."
Seriously, check out the MySpace tracks, or better yet, if you live in Toronto just hit up that free in-store or the band's NXNE performance on Thursday (June 18), when they'll play alongside the Most Serene Republic, Timber Timbre, Zeus and a "surprise guest headliner."
