Stephen Sondheim, the composer who created the American musical as we know it, has died. He was 91.
The New York Times confirms that Sondheim died earlier today at his home in Roxbury, CT. The news was confirmed by his lawyer, F. Richard Pappas. He had reportedly celebrated Thanksgiving at a dinner with friends the night before.
Sondheim's well-known works include writing the lyrics for West Side Story (1957) and Gypsy (1959), as well as composing Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1979), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962), Into the Woods (1987), A Little Night Music (1973), Company (1970) and more.
He won nine Tony Awards and eight Grammys, plus an Oscar for writing Madonna's "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)" (from 1990's Dick Tracy).
Company was set to return to Broadway in March 2020, to coincide with Sondheim's 90th birthday. After pandemic delays, it's now set to open on December 9. In place of the planned opening, Sondheim's 90th birthday was celebrated last year with a star-studded livestream concert.
