The cover art of Soundgarden's 1994 LP Superunknown features a blurry figure opposite a flipped image of a burning forest, as you can see above. The figure on the front has become known to most as the "screaming elf," though photographer Kevin Westenberg is looking to shed a bit more light on the shot in revealing the full, uncropped image.
Westenberg shared the full shot on Instagram along with a brief backstory of how it came to be. The photographer, who has also worked with the likes of Blur, Radiohead, R.E.M. and more, shared the shot a week removed from the death of Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell.
You can find both the image and Westenberg's brief oral history below, and you can read our Essential Guide to the work of Chris Cornell here. Thanks to Spin for the tip.
