Sorry, Morrissey Isn't Actually on Twitter

Let this be a lesson: if something seems to be too good to be true, then it probably is. Sadly, it seems that Morrissey's newly launched Twitter account is bogus.

Earlier this week (May 14), someone began tweeting from @itsmorrissey. This earned extensive media coverage, and the account has already racked up 250,000 followers.

Today (May 16), however, Moz issued a statement to semi-official fan site True to You saying he's not behind the account. The statement is as follows:

I would like to stress that I do not have either a Twitter or a Facebook account. I gather that a Twitter account has been opened in my name - as 'It's Morrissey' - but it is NOT Morrissey. I do not know who has opened this recent Twitter account, but please be aware that it is bogus. That's, of course, if you should remotely care.

Untwitterably yours,

MORRISSEY

Curiously, Twitter has given the @itsmorrissey account a checkmark of legitimacy, indicating that it's real. Morrissey has also denied having a Facebook account; it's possible, then, that this allegedly official page (with over a million followers) is also fake, although perhaps he simply means he doesn't control it personally.

So far, @itsmorrissey has made a few very mundane tweets about tour dates and pre-order copies of the forthcoming World Peace Is None of Your Business. Frankly, learning that this account is fake explains a lot, since we can't imagine the real Morrissey tweeting something like this:
