Back in 2010, Toronto played host to a Nick Drake tribute night that we said "did true justice to its inspiration." That event was such a success that the organizer, songwriter Luke Jackson, will be reviving the idea for a full-fledged tour of Ontario and Quebec this November.
Among the artists who will be covering Drake's songs are Oh Susanna, Kevin Kane (the Grapes of Wrath) and Jackson himself, plus a band composed of Don Kerr, Jason Mercer and Kurt Swinghammer. They will be joined by a string quartet, which will expand to an octet in a few of the bigger cities thanks to some local musicians. Dubbed the "Songs of Nick Drake," the tour has also been approved to use arranger Robert Kirby's original string parts from Drake's songs.
Tribute band member Swinghammer will be releasing a 12-inch single to coincide with the tour, featuring his cover of Drake's "River Man" on the A-side, with his version of Donovan's "Sunny Goodge Street" on the flip.
These touring artists will be joined by guest performers from each town. Among the artists who will be chipping in throughout the course of the tour are Ron Sexsmith, Jim Bryson, Jeremy Fisher, Louis-Jean Cormier of Karkwa, and more.
