Kamamooshkaming Sagiiwehwining: Indigenous Music & Arts Festival has unveiled the full artist lineup, schedule, and market vendors for the event's two-day takeover of Sankofa Square in Downtown Toronto. Presented by the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF), in partnership with Canada's Music Incubator and Sankofa Square, the festival will take place from May 30 to 31 in honour of the beginning of Indigenous History Month.
Singer-songwriter Aysanabee is set to headline the stage at Sankofa Square on May 30, while hip-hop duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids will close out the festival with their headlining set on May 31.
Among the other acts slated to perform are Tia Wood, Sebastian Gaskin, Drives the Common Man, Julian Taylor, Shawnee Kish, Reuben and the Bullhorn Singers, Thea May, DJ Classic Roots, Noelle and Ila Barker.
The community-centred festival borrows its name from Anishinaabemowin, with Kamamooshkaming (kah-ma-moosh-ka-ming) Sagiiwehwining (sah-gee-way-winning) meaning "coming together in a good way." The DWF shared on their website, "Just as Indigenous people and communities have done since time immemorial, the festival will bring together individuals — from artists and musicians to students and educators — to collaborate, celebrate, and build community."
Alongside the musical performances, Kamamooshkaming Sagiiwehwining will host 19 Indigenous-centred market vendors and booths, as well as historical and cultural presentations by Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers and creators. Both entertaining and educational, the event will be a lively celebration of Indigenous art, music, and culture.
The event is completely free to attend. More information can be found here.
