Smashing Pumpkins are gearing up for their new album Cyr, but if it weren't for COVID-19, the band would have also been doing a lot more this year. In fact, Billy Corgan and co. had been planning to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their classic 1995 double album Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness with a world tour.
As a press release explains, the official tour announcement was scheduled to arrive tomorrow (October 23), but this has now been postponed due to the pandemic. On the plus side, the band are planning to still take Mellon Collie on tour in 2021, with the dates and more information promised to be revealed soon.
On top of the tour, Smashing Pumpkins have also confirmed what they are calling "a sequel concept album to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and MACHINA." So far no further details have been revealed about the album, but it will be out in late 2021, and "this musical themed concept album is the 3rd album in the trilogy," the PR states.
Since we're going to have to wait a while to properly celebrate Mellon Collie's anniversary properly, Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin will be doing a live Q&A on Friday, moderated by Daniel P. Carter. It starts at 1 p.m. ET, and you can participate here.
Last month, the band also teamed up with streetwear company HUF for a new merch line inspired by Mellon Collie.
Cyr is set to arrive on November 27 through Sumerian Records. The album is their 11th and follows the band's 2018 full-length Shiny and Oh So Bright Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun.
