Smashing Pumpkins "Freaked Out" When Jane's Addiction Came to One of Their Early Shows

"It was like 100 people; so when you guys came in about halfway through the show, we were like, 'God, they're here!'"

Smashing Pumpkins and Jane's Addiction have been keeping the dream of the '90s alive on their co-headlining Spirits on Fire tour, despite a few unfortunate trials and tribulations for the latter alt-rock act. Keeping the spirits on fire, Billy Corgan and Perry Farrell are the latest to partake in Live Nation's 1:1 interview series, revealing some of the two bands' interwoven memories and experiences over the 30-plus years they've known each other.

In a very Between Two Ferns-esque setting (albeit fern-free, but it looks like there might be a snake plant back there?), the two bandleaders sat down in cushy leather chairs to reminisce on days of yore and give some insights into their current tour together. Corgan and Farrell seem to have a lot of mutual respect and admiration for one another, and this predates their relationship: apparently, Farrell's unanticipated presence at an early Pumpkins show kind of made Corgan and co. fanboy.

Corgan says he'll "forever remember" when Farrell and Jane's guitarist Dave Navarro came to a small Smashing Pumpkins show in Denver in 1992 during a night off from Lollapalooza.

"When we made an album '93, which was Siamese Dream, you actually saw us not too long before that," Corgan recalled. "And it was almost nobody there! It was like 100 people, so when you guys came in about halfway through the show, we were like, 'God, they're here!' We all freaked out because now we're just playing for you guys."

Elsewhere, Farrell shared that, previously unbeknownst to Corgan, Jane's Addiction's decision to release a live recording as their debut had been an intentional one. "The idea being, I don't know if they'll ever get to hear us as raw and as energized as we are right now," Farrell explained. "I wanted them to hear us and know of us in our most honest, innocent. … I wanted to capture that before anyone could ruin that."

Corgan added of their current touring stint together: "People focus on a lot of different elements when they talk about our bands. 'What songs are they gonna play? Who's in the band?' They don't understand that it's the spirit — and in our particular case, the common spirit; it's that we're here to spread a message that is very particular to where we came from."
