For whatever reason, the allure of playing live shows is too strong for some of music's most hated acts. Following an enormous Chainsmokers concert in the Hamptons last month, '90s goof rock act Smash Mouth performed for thousands of people in South Dakota last night.
As previously reported, the Shrek soundtrackers were booked to play the 80th annual Sturgis Buffalo Chip motorcycle rally and concert series alongside the Guess Who, Buckcherry, Trapt, Lit, Big Skillet, Saving Abel, Drowning Pool, and Quiet Riot, among others. Against all reason, Smash Mouth went ahead and did just that.
While Buffalo Chip organizers had asked attendees to try to use hand sanitizer, wear masks and keep their distance, footage and photos from the show suggest it was far more packed than usual. In fact, there were more people watching Smash Mouth than one might reasonably expect, pandemic or not.
At one point during the show, frontman Steve Harwell even said, "We're all here together tonight! Fuck that COVID shit!"
