Simeon Coxe of pioneering electronic rock group Silver Apples has died. He was 82.
The news was announced on the obituaries section of AL.com (Alabama's official website). It confirms that Coxe died in Fairhope, AL, on September 8. He requested that no formal service be held. The cause of death was not revealed.
Coxe began his music career fronting the New York rock group the Overland Stage Electric Band in the 1960s, and he began exploring electronic sounds when he incorporated an oscillator into their shows. The group then evolved into Silver Apples, a duo featuring Coxe and Danny Taylor.
The group released two albums in the late '60s before disbanding. They eventually reunited for a couple of albums in the late '90s, most recently returning for the album Clinging to a Dream in 2016. Taylor died in 2005.
Outside of music, Coxe worked as TV news reporter in Alabama in the '70s and '80s. He suffered a broken neck in 1998 when Silver Apples' tour van was forced off the road, and his music career was temporarily put on hold.
