In 2014, SIANspheric ended a decade-long break with the delivery of their "The Owl" / "Smokin' Richie" 7-inch. Now, the Hamilton, ON-based shoegaze unit are set to return with a brand new album.
Marking SIANspheric's first new album since 2001's The Sound of the Colour of the Sun, the band's new full-length Writing the Future in Letters of Fire arrives on October 28 through Sonic Unyon. Right now, though, Exclaim! is giving you a glimpse of things to come with the premiere of "I Have It." The track's title translates to Spanish as "Yo La Tengo," perhaps not so coincidentally, as the long-running indie rock heroes of the same name could easily be cited as an influence.
They aren't the only pop culture reference SIANspheric have channelled through their music, though. The upcoming LP holds the prize for "the longest gestating album title of all time" (the band were selling merch branded with "Writing in the Future of Letters of Fire" back in 2010) and serves as a nod to Neil Gaiman's American Gods.
As some fans may remember, The Sound of the Colour of the Sun also borrowed from Douglas Coupland's Shampoo Planet.
"Literary references have played an important role in our lyrics and song titles," the band tell Exclaim! "'Ending is Better than Mending' is from Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, 'No Space' is via No Logo by Naomi Klein and 'This All Happened' is from the book of the same name by Michael Winter."
The new record promises plenty of allusions to dig through, but for now, get an idea of what the new music sounds like by giving the premiere of "I Have It" a play below.
Along with the new album, SIANspheric's 1995 LP will be released on vinyl for the first time to mark the passing of its 20th anniversary. That vinyl reissue is also set to arrive on October 28.
