Garage rock lifers Shannon and the Clams have announced plans to release their sixth full-length album Year of the Spider. The record will arrive on August 20 via Easy Eye Sound.

Why is it called Year of the Spider? As Shannon Shaw said, "I am terrified of spiders, but my mom always told me that they are drawn to me.... The symbolism of the spider made a full turn in an interesting way. I was getting protection from the thing I feared the most."

Plus, she said, "Spiders destroy the bullshit bugs. Like mosquitoes. Who needs 'em?"

The band have previewed the album with a video for "Midnight Wine," which was animated by their own Cody Blanchard.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Blanchard said, "When I wrote this song, I was thinking of friends I've had that have died from drug addiction and that feeling of desperation that drives you to seek shelter from reality in drugs. I've watched so many artists and outsiders around me struggle and flounder in this way. They die when they can't find community or peace. It's heartbreaking."
