Seu Jorge Teams Up with Brazilian Trio Almaz for Collaborative Album, Plays Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver

To many, Seu Jorge is best known as Pelé dos Santos, the Bowie-obsessed, red-toque-wearing troubadour aboard the Belafonte in Wes Anderson's ocean epic The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Beyond that, however, Jorge is a beloved singer-songwriter who adds a Brazilian samba sensibility to his pop songs, and this summer he will release the first album with the trio Almaz.

The group are made up of drummer Pupilo and guitarist Lucio Maia (from popular Brazilian group Nação Zumb)i, along with bassist and composer Antonio Pinto. Almaz first met Jorge to record a song for a Walter Salles film.

According to a press release, "They enjoyed the experience so much that they recorded an entire album, free of convention, of music that inspired them: they covered songs famous within the Brazilian diaspora and added a psychedelic samba to some classic American and European soul tunes."

The resulting album, simply called Seu Jorge and Almaz, will be released by Stones Throw offshoot Now-Again Records on July 27. Around that time, the quartet will embark on a major North American tour that includes Canadian stops in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

Currently, a single for the band's Roy Ayers cover, "Everybody Loves the Sunshine," is available now from Stones Throw here. The bundle comes with the album versions of "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" and "Cirandar," as well as instrumentals for each track. It's available now digitally, and will be followed by a proper twelve-inch release.

"Everybody Loves the Sunshine" can also be downloaded here.
