Seneca

Sweeter Than Bourbon

BY Michael EdwardsPublished Oct 25, 2008

Considering the number of bands emerging from the Emerald Isle at the moment, someone must be adding something to the drinking water in Ireland. Unfortunately, it seems that there's a really good chance it's lithium because Seneca join a long list of Snow Patrol-esque bands trying to emulate that level of success. Sweeter Than Bourbon is an average album from an average band. It's bland, inoffensive and the kind of background music that's destined to catch the ear of a television executive and end up playing when two characters kiss then walk away on an episode of Grey's Anatomy. There's nothing particularly horrible about Seneca but their derivative nature makes it hard to separate them from similar bands. When they do try to crank things up, relatively speaking, it sounds more forced than the gentler songs where they at least sound genuine. But until they have something even slightly unique, they are going to be just another band who want to chase cars.
