Seely Winter Birds

For their third record, Winter Birds, Georgian pop group Seely lays down another series of tranquil tunes of magic and loss. The magic, in this case, is the further growth of their delicate, but surprisingly muscular brand of drifting sounds, reminiscent of former label-mates like Stereolab and Broadcast, despite the fact that they no longer call Too Pure home. Loss, in this case, of a spouse (“Alias Grace), a dog, (“Sandy”), and a record label (“Altamaha”) but not of a sound. Although at times Seely approaches the melancholy pop of Aimee Mann, funky instrumentation keeps everything slightly off kilter, making this smart pop you can dance and weep to. (Koch)
