Samantha Martin

'Mississippi Sun' (EP stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Apr 9, 2014

Samantha Martin recently swung by Exclaim! TV in advance of her Mississippi Sun EP, and now she's shared the entire collection ahead of its April 15 release on Dollartone Records. It's available to stream now on Exclaim.ca.

The Toronto singer recorded all five songs live off the floor in a single day at Lincoln County Social Club in her hometown. The session features Martin on acoustic and steel guitars, backed by a couple of players on electric guitar and percussion.

The EP also includes backup vocals from Amoy and Ciceal Levy, who reinforce the soulful, rootsy gospel vibe. Opener "Won't You Stay" is a stripped-down R&B waltz, while "One More Day" has a floorboard-stompin' Southern sound, and the title cut is a graceful acoustic number.

Hear it all below, where you'll also find Martin's upcoming Canadian tour dates. After this, she has a full-length album in the works.
