Rykka Announces Domestic Release of Ryan Guldemond-produced Debut 'Kodiak,' Maps Out Canadian Tour

BY Gregory AdamsPublished May 6, 2013

Vancouver-born, Switzerland-based musician Rykka apparently wrote her upcoming debut LP Kodiak in a European farmhouse, but the singer-guitarist brought those tunes back to her hometown to record with producer/Mother Mother leader Ryan Guldemond.

A press release notes that while Kodiak has already been released in Switzerland, a Canadian edition arrives May 28 via Vissen Records. The album was penned by Rykka throughout 2011, but recorded at Vancouver's fabled (and recently shut down) Mushroom Studios with engineer Sean Penner (You Say Party), mixer Warne Livesey (Matthew Good Band, 54:40) and Guldemond.

"Ryan has a really strong vision," Rykka notes. "I wanted to work with him because I knew that we would clash. He fights for his idea and I fight for mine, and what we come away with is the right thing to do."

Conceptually, Kodiak has Rykka singing each song from the perspective of a different animal, such a s a crow on "Blackie" or a fish on "Deep in the Depths," though "they carry unquestionably human themes and concerns." You can see the video for "Blackie" down below.

Rykka also starts a tour of Canada at the end of the month, with dates running between BC and Quebec. You can see the details down below.
