Run the Jewels Pemberton Stage, Pemberton BC, July 17
Published Jul 18, 2015It was a grand entrance for Run the Jewels. El-P and Killer Mike took the stage to Queen's "We Are the Champions," shadow-boxing and lip-synching to a highly responsive crowd. "There's always a beach ball," quipped El-P.
By the second track, massive hit "Oh My Darling Don't Cry," the crowd was essentially at their whim. The banter between Killer Mike and El-P, coupled with semi-choreographed movements and Killer Mike at one point throwing down and back-peddling across the stage, was not only endearing, but the kind of musicianship that garners and deserves the fan base they have.
"It's time to put that fragile shit in your pocket," shouted El-P in reference to cell phones and GoPros, before launching into "Close Your Eyes," spawning a massive mosh pit. A moment of silence for those caught in the line of racial violence led right into the percussion-heavy "All Due Respect," and prompted a massive call and response with the crowd. And while the masses emptied out after the last track, RTJ came back for an encore, dropping "Angel Duster" for the loyal fans remaining.
