Published Sep 09, 2016Social action platform Global Citizen is looking to raise awareness surrounding some of the world's deadliest diseases with star-studded events in both Canada and the United States, and one of the bigger names attached to the campaign is calling on North Americans to give Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau a ring.
Having spent a fair amount of time north of the border recently, Rihanna took to Twitter today to urge her fan base (known as the Navy) to call up the Canadian leader to increase the country's foreign aid budget, particularly for health and education.
The platform is looking for the Canadian government to commit $150 million in new funding towards polio eradication, along with $75 million in new funding to the Education Cannot Wait Fund.
As previously reported, Global Citizen will host a free concert at the Bell Centre in Montreal on September 17, featuring Usher with the Roots, Half Moon Run, Grimes, Metric and Charlotte Cardin. The event is in support of the Global Fund's fight to end AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria by 2030. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Microsoft founder Bill Gates will also be in attendance.
A total of 10,000 tickets for the Canadian event will be handed out through a lottery process, which fans can enter by completing five tasks here. The concert will be broadcast live on Bell Fibe TV1 and live streamed at iHeartRadio.ca.
Rihanna won't be appearing at the Canadian edition of the event, having landed at the top of the bill for the September 24 event in New York City's Central Park. She'll be joined by Kendrick Lamar, Demi Lovato, Major Lazer and Metallica.
