137

Hyper-conscious folk rock genius Rick White has returned with a blindsiding double album's worth of surreally satisfying psychedelic innovation. More than most of his contemporaries, White's artistic pursuits tend to come across as explorative expeditions, as his thoughts and visions manifest themselves in piles of realizations before he conveys them in startling songs. A broad meeting of emotions and pure feeling, RickWhiteAlbum have served as a kind of personal stocktaking for him artistically, and while it can all be hauntingly heavy, in the end, White's an unusually gifted source of hard rock riffs and pop hooks. So it is that 137 piles monstrous waves upon listeners ("One and Two," "Perception") and giddily gathered melodic grooves ("Belief," "Infinite Disguise"). Touching upon the edges of genres but never falling into their conventions, 137 is a searching record yet it's another remarkable display of Rick White's singular status as a vital artist through and through.
