It's been a very productive year for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who just released their second 17-song album of the year, Return of the Dream Canteen. Apparently, that's less music than they originally intended to release, since they wanted to put out a single 40-song album.

This tidbit came from guitarist John Frusciante's new interview with Mixmag, in which he revealed that the band wanted to release a 7LP vinyl set with 40 songs. Their label, Warner Records, balked at the plans, and they compromised by separating the material into two albums.

That planned album would have been significantly longer than 2006's Stadium Arcadium, which had 28 songs in a 4LP set.

RHCP reportedly finished 48 songs in the sessions, 36 of which have been released across two albums (plus two Japanese bonus tracks).
