Red Hot Chili Peppers Celebrate 20th Anniversary of 'Californication' with Picture Disc Reissue

Red Hot Chili Peppers' 1999 album Californication came out exactly 20 years ago yesterday (June 8), and the California funk-rock vets are celebrating with a picture disc reissue.

The 15-song album is split across two LPs, which are emblazoned with the album cover. That's what the picture disc looks like up above.

The reissue is available from RHCP's online store for $29.99 USD ($39.85 CAD). This is a pre-order, since the official release isn't until September 13. It's currently unclear if the picture discs will be released in stores or if this is an online exclusive. There's also a new Californication T-shirt available for the same price.

The 2LP is part of Warner Records' Picture This series. Check it out here.

Californication was the comeback record for since-departed guitarist John Frusciante, who left the band for much of the 1990s while battling a heroin addiction. The album includes the hits "Scar Tissue," "Otherside," "Californication" and "Around the World." It's sold over 15 million copies worldwide.

It's unclear if this picture disc features a remastered version of the album. Californication is famously a victim of the "loudness war," with aggressive dynamic compression that results in poor audio quality. Then again, picture discs aren't usually known for exceptionally high fidelity.
