Record a Personal Message for Gord Downie with 'Raise One for Gord'

BY Calum SlingerlandPublished Aug 2, 2016

The news of Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie's terminal brain cancer diagnosis rocked the Canadian music world this year, and while tributes to the man have come in from a host of fellow musicians, a new website now allows fans to leave a personal message of their own to one of the country's most revered songwriters.

The newly launched Raise One for Gord site lets users record a personalized video message for Downie using their webcam or mobile phone camera. From there, they can save the video to share with friends and have it uploaded to a stream of compiled messages from other users, set to a soundtrack of Tragically Hip hits.

The site was created by Nickel Media, who brought the idea to life using their video rendering technology Imposium. "Like most Canadians, and most people facing unfortunate circumstances out of their control, we're all feeling pretty helpless," Nickel Media creative director Jeff Middleton said in a statement. "We wanted to give people a way to express themselves in a way that fit, and that's by raising a glass."

Listeners can find the site here, through which they they can also make a donation to the Sunnybrook Foundation.

The Tragically Hip are currently trekking across the country on tour in support of their latest LP, Man Machine Poem. Read our Essential Guide to the band here.
