Rare Outtakes from Rush's 'Moving Pictures' Album Shoot Surface for 40th Anniversary

The Deborah Samuel Collection photos have never been made public — until now

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of Rush's iconic 1981 album Moving Pictures, a collection of rare outtakes from the cover photoshoot have been released for the first time.

Photographer Deborah Samuel captured the memorable artwork image for Moving Pictures, and Rush fans will now be able to obtain the previously unseen photographs — of which no alternate versions have ever appeared in print or online.

Instantly recognizable, the photos were taken outside of the Ontario Legislative building in Toronto. The final version that appeared on the band's eighth LP was chosen from the 43 shots taken that day.

The release of the limited-edition Deborah Samuel Collection marks the debut of three alternate front album covers, three alternate back album covers and 12 interior artwork photographs of Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson from the original Moving Pictures shoot.

"I clearly remember the day Deborah set up for this cover — especially the interior series of the 'Moving Pictures' photographs," Lifeson said in a statement. "I was jumping around in the dark with a bright strobe flashing away, which was disorienting to say the least; but the results fit so well with the album concept and I loved the final photos she produced. I'm thrilled to revisit them and make the covers and these interior photos available in support of Grapes For Humanity."

In partnership with Definitive Authentic, Grapes for Humanity is supporting the Genius 100 Foundation's (G100) Gift of Sight Campaign and the Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP). Proceeds from the photographs will fund sight-restoring surgeries ($125 USD each) for those in need in the under-resourced regions where HCP operates.

Primus recently announced their plans to pay tribute to Rush on their 2022 North American tour, meanwhile, Lifeson jammed with Crown Lands ahead of their Massey Hall performance.
