Last month, Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood performed his latest composition, titled "Dogwood," to an intimate crowd at the BBC's famous Maida Vale Studios, reiterating why he was asked to be composer-in-residence for the BBC Concert Orchestra. Now, as TwentyFourBit reports, that composition is about to turn into a full-blown film score.
In an interview following the performance, Greenwood and conductor Robert Ziegler revealed that the composition would be extrapolated into a score for the upcoming, Anh Hung Tran-directed film Norwegian Wood. The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Haruki Murakami.
Greenwood described the writing of the piece to the BBC, who have since taken down the link. "I wrote this piece mostly in hotels and dressing rooms while touring with Radiohead. This was more practical than glamorous - lots of time sitting around indoors, lots of instruments about - and aside from picking up a few geographical working titles, I can't think that it had any effect where, on tour, it was written."
And just in case you're doubting any of this, IMDB lists Jonny Greenwood as doing the "original music" for the film, which is being released in Japan in December.
The premiere performance of "Doghouse" will be broadcast by BBC Radio 3 on March 19 at 2 p.m. We assume that means British time, which makes it very late the night of March 18, or very early in the morning, depending on where in North America you live.
