R. Kelly Plotting Broadway Version of 'Trapped in the Closet'

R. Kelly is about to reveal the latest chunk of chapters to his off-the-wall hip-hopera Trapped in the Closet, but beyond this week's U.S. TV screening, the ridiculous R&B auteur has grand plans to bring his tale of seduction, intrigue and "the package" to Broadway.

Following the premiere of the latest instalments, Kels admitted during a Q&A at New York City's Landmark Sunshine Cinemas [via Rolling Stone] that he is hoping to bring the song cycle to the stage. Though he didn't expand on when he hoped to have the likes of Chuck, Rufus, Rosie the Nosy Neighbor and Pimp Lucius hit the theatrical stage, the musical may not arrive until after the singer drops the previously reported 85 chapters elsewhere.

Without delivering too much of a spoiler, the chapters that are set to drop this Friday (November 23) on IFC are set up as confessionals on a talk show, titled Out of the Closet with Larry, which leads up to the characters coming face-to-face on-air.

Following a five-year gap between chapters, Kelly told the press that it wasn't hard to get back into the project.

"When you commit to something and have fun with it, it appreciates you, the gift, and it starts to help you out," he told the crowd. "It cheats through things for you and it kind of writes itself. I'm having so much fun with this thing. I'm so committed to it, it just happens. It just continues to happen. Every time I put the track on, I hear these new stories and new characters."

He continued, "Trapped in the Closet is pretty much forever," adding that we won't have to wait too long for yet another batch of chapters to drop. "I want you guys to know, I'm not going to leave you guys hanging five years again for the next chapter. . . . The next chapters that are coming [are] going to exceed every chapter that you've ever seen. I guarantee it."
