Michiel Eikenaar — the death metal vocalist who played in the bands Nihill and Dodecahedron — has passed away. He was 42.

The sad news was announced by Nihill member Vince Koreman, plus the label Season of Mist. Pitchfork confirmed that the cause of death was cancer. He passed away yesterday (April 12).

Dodecahedron are playing today at Roadburn Festival in Eikenaar's home country, the Netherlands. Season of Mist confirmed that, despite the tragedy, the band will play the show in the vocalist's honour.

Koreman wrote in his statement that Nihill were in the process of working on a new album called Seven Trumpets of Doom. Those recordings will be abandoned and the group will disband, effective immediately.

Koreman said, "A commanding frontman and fantastic lyricist, a great visual artist, but above all, a big friendly loveable guy. Death comes for all of us. It comes for the strongest, the brightest and the most loved, and Michiel was all of those things and much more."

Eikenaar is survived by his wife and two children. Read the statements from both Nihill and Season of Mist below.
