The Provincial Archive Sign to Black Box for New EP, Share Elliott Smith Cover

Edmonton folkies the Provincial Archive are playing Black Box Music's 10-year anniversary show this week in Toronto for CMW, so it makes sense to learn that they've now signed to the label. Their Hide Like a Secret EP will arrive on June 10 in advance of a new full-length.

The new songs apparently mix indie-folk and art-pop influences, and a press release points to sonic elements like "detuned synthesizers" and "thick vocal harmonies."

The four-song collection includes "Daisy Garden," which is reportedly slated for the impending full-length, and closes with a version of Elliott Smith's "Son of Sam." Scroll past the tracklist to watch the band play a live in-studio rendition of the Smith cover; the EP version is also below. It remains fairly faithful to Smith's original, right down to the ghostly backing harmonies.

"We're huge Elliott Smith fans, and it was amazing to work through something that we love in detail," frontman Craig Schram said in a statement.

Expect the album to follow later in the summer.

Hide Like a Secret:
