Protest the Hero have returned with details of their highly anticipated fifth studio album, in addition to a new single.

The Ontario outfit will release new album Palimpsest on June 19. New single "The Canary" features Propagandhi's Todd Kowalski on bass and can be heard in the player below, while the album is available for pre-order here.

Ten tracks in length, Palimpsest marks the Protest the Hero's first new material since EP Pacific Myth, which first saw release through a subscription series in late 2015 ahead being treated to a physical release the following year.

The band's last proper studio LP was 2013's Volition, which arrived independently after the band launched a successful crowdfunding campaign.

"Palimpsest is by far the most challenging record we have worked on," guitarist Luke Hoskin said in a statement. "The writing and recording process saw so many delays, it's honestly hard to keep them straight. We are very proud of how each hurdle was handled though, and the end result is a record that we believe is deserving of such an endeavour."

Those hurdles included serious vocal health issues that befell frontman Rody Walker, which put recording sessions on hold in the summer of 2018. After recovering, he would return to track vocals in July 2019, ahead of completing the album last November.

"This record was extremely difficult for me personally," Walker added. "With my first child on the way, I built a studio in my basement to ensure I wasn't leaving my wife alone with a new child for weeks on end. I haven't left my house since."

He continued: "What made it most difficult was the change in my voice. During our final tour just before we were set to start recording, I blew my voice out, and it didn't come back. I spent a long time fighting with it trying to bounce back and failing. Finally, through coaching and rehearsal, I got it back in shape. For the first time in my life singing felt like an actual job and I'm still pissed about it. I have never worked harder to put out music in my life and I am extremely proud of the product."

Yesterday (April 15), the band appeared to tease imminent album news on social media, posting a greyhound racing out of the gate wearing a jersey with the number five.
In the time between albums, Walker fronted offshoot Mystery Weekend, which features his PTH bandmate Mike Ieradi on drums alongside guitarist Dan Hay (the Fully Down, Amos the Transparent). That band released debut LP Surprise! in 2017.
