Prince Paul and Digable Planets' Ladybug Mecca Form BROOKZILL!

BY Calum SlingerlandPublished Jul 20, 2016

Having not released a solo record since 2005's Itstrumental, Prince Paul is set to return with a new collective of artists in BROOKZILL! Ten years in the making, the collective are described as "the sonic link between New York and Brazil, Hip-Hop's future with its far-reaching past."

Along with Paul, the group includes Digable Planets' Ladybug Mecca, Rodrigo Brandão (a.k.a. Gorila Urbano) and Don Newkirk (the Dix). The project was born out of a meeting between Paul and Brandão in São Paulo, with the pair vowing to record together. As the two explored musically, Mecca and Newkirk were soon brought into the fold.

To introduce the world to their sound, Paul has announced the release of a trio of mixtapes inspired by each of his bandmates that will lead up to the release of a full-length LP in October. Titled Throwback to the Future, the record will feature collaborations with a host of Brazilian artists, keyboardist Brian Jackson, Del the Funky Homosapien, Count Bass D, Kid Koala, Mr. Len and more.

"To me, BROOKZILL! is a throwback to why I started my whole career: good music is good music, regardless of what the language is, what the culture is," Paul explained in a press release. "This record stands by what I've always stood by. It might not be what you're familiar with. But for some reason, you just like it 'cause it's good. It shouldn't have a face on it, it should just be felt."

Throwback to the Future is set to arrive on October 7, but until then, take in the first instalment in the collective's trio of mixtapes in the player below, inspired by Brandão.
