The annual Polaris Music Prize, which recognizes the best Canadian album from the past year, is currently in the midst of its seventh instalment. Following the previously unveiled long list of 40 nominees, the organizers have now rolled out the short list of ten albums that will be in the running for this year's award.

The short list was announced today (July 17) at the Drake Hotel in Toronto. The contenders were chosen by a jury of over 200 journalists, bloggers and broadcasters from across the country, who voted on the top albums released between June 2011 and May 2012. The ultimate winner from this top ten will be announced on September 24 at CTV's Concert Hall in Toronto's Masonic Temple, with $30,000 going to the victor.

These albums were chosen based on artistic merit alone. The short list is below, and the artists are listed in alphabetical order.
