Peter Katz Announces 'City of Our Lives' LP, Premieres New Video

The Canadian songwriter takes a hard look in the mirror

JUNO Award, Canadian Screen Award and two-time Canadian Folk Music Award nominee Peter Katz has announced a new album. City of Our Lives will be out September 18 via Plaid Shirt Music, and Exclaim! has the premiere of the video for the record's "I Will Never Leave You."

The song is melodic and catchy, with an breezy folk-pop sound that makes it an easy listen.

In a statement, Katz said, "When I first wrote the lyric 'I Will Never Leave You,' I thought it was for someone else, but it became clear that the person I was writing for was in the mirror. Oftentimes the first person we sacrifice is ourselves, which ultimately means we can't be of service to anybody. I've certainly been guilty of this at times."

This epiphany of Katz's is exemplified in the accompanying video, directed by Justin Broadbent, as the songwriter intimately sings to the camera with a dark background bringing him even more into the forefront — almost as if the only person relevant in that moment is himself. In many ways, he is his own muse.

Opening up about the writing experience for the track, Katz stated, "The whole writing experience had me so far out of my comfort zone that I felt like I wasn't confined to any rules of what a 'Peter Katz song' is supposed to sound like. I wrote 'I Will Never Leave You' for me, but I'm putting it out there for you. I hope you can spend some time with it, see what I put in there for you, and hopefully feel more connected and loving towards yourself through the experience of it."

City of Our Lives was produced by Derek Hoffman (the Trews, RALPH, Caveboy).
