Pelican Return with Their First New Album in Six Years 'Nighttime Stories'

The band have also shared the song "Midnight and Mescaline" and mapped out a North American tour

Pelican have just announced their first new album in six years. Titled Nighttime Stories, the LP will arrive June 7 via Southern Lord. For a taste, you can already hear the lead single "Midnight and Mescaline."

Nighttime Stories is the first album to be entirely written by Pelican's Dallas Thomas, who took over guitar duties after founding member Laurent Schroeder-Lebec left the band in 2012. The new album comes in the wake of 2013's Forever Becoming — an album that was later followed up by the 2015 EP The Cliff.

A press release for Nighttime Stories offers the following:

In the process of writing the album the quartet endured a slew of realizations, tragedies, and glimmers of optimism that guided the creative process to the most potent work of their nineteen-year career. Though the new material veers towards the darker tone characteristic of Pelican's early songwriting, it's hard to imagine a previous incarnation of the band writing songs as meticulously crafted and detail-oriented as those within Nighttime Stories, where the compositions recall everything from the triumphant call-to-arms of classic Dischord, to the vicious troglodyte battery of the Melvins, to the dynamic interwoven melodies of bottom-heavy indie cult heroes Chavez.

For an idea of how that plays out sonically, you can stream the lead single "Midnight and Mescaline" below. As previously reported, the track will be arriving as a 7-inch on Record Store Day on Saturday (April 13) and will include the exclusive B-side track "Darkness on the Stairs."

In addition to the new album, Pelican have mapped out a brief North American tour, which includes Canadian dates in Toronto on June 21 and Montreal on June 22. See those dates below, where you'll also find the album's tracklist.
