Communism should seem oddly incongruent in a cowboy hat — albeit a figurative one — but the all-in approach worked well for Oh Susanna, Daniel Romano, and Kayla Howran. Trading off on one-another's songs, held together by some mighty fine slide work and a penchant for twang, each performer was visibly thrilled with the setup. At the outset, Romano had the lead, his rousing blues-inflected country setting a romping pace. Things slowed, though, for Oh Susanna highlight, "Lucky Ones." Crystalline and emotive, Suzie Ungerleider's voice rose above the din for talk of fairy tales and regret. Another volta, Kayla Howran's mid-tempo standout, "Country Born and Raised," channelled June Carter with added verve. All in all it was a fun and playful affair. And kudos to Romano for pulling off a sequin blazer.
