Scottish electronic artist/producer Ewan Robertson, who performed under the alias Offshore, has died. The cause and the date of death have yet to be revealed, but the musician's record label Big Dada confirmed his passing this morning (December 5). He was 27 years old.
Big Dada's eulogy reveals that Robertson had been involved with the label in a number of ways. First, he arrived as a volunteer and eventually put his graphic designs skills to work for Ninja Tune and Big Dada releases. Some of his artwork include the covers to Wiley's Playtime Is Over, Bonobo's Black Sands and Roots Manuva's Slime & Reason.
Most recently, Robertson had been issuing music under his Offshore moniker and had just delivered the Bake Haus LP this fall. Exclaim! called the neo-electro chillout album a "wholly original piece of art," and praised Robertson for "his often fearless, always strange and sometimes disaffecting method of structuring songs."
"An incredibly subtle man, part of his talent was to make difficult things look easy," Big Dada wrote. "His recent record, Bake Haus, was one such example, apparently thrown off without breaking a sweat, but actually the result of considerable thought and skill — the minimalism a deliberate choice, beautifully delivered on. He was also, in addition to his many talents, one of the finest individuals we have had the honour of working with — straightforward, positive, funny and understated, he was a proper gent. We will miss him terribly and send all our love to Jen and his family, whose loss is so much greater."
