OD

Beneath The Surface Presents...

BY Thomas QuinlanPublished May 1, 2000

The man who masterminded the beautifully orchestrated Beneath The Surface compilation has returned with a new twelve-inch of tracks not available on the album. It's no surprise that OD comes correct with both beats. The first, for Freestyle Fellowship's "Can You Find The Level Of Difficulty In This?," is a good beat, but it's not really that special. Although it has some nice progression throughout, it's really Freestyle Fellowship members Mikah 9, Aceyalone, P.E.A.C.E. and Self-Jupiter that hold the track together with the tight rhymes they've built up over years working together. It's a great song, but there's not really that great of a level of difficulty in the beat, as good as it is. On Adlib's "The Ancient Art Of Adlibbing," OD supplies a fantastic beat that makes the instrumental a must have. With the drum & bass break on the chorus, the flutes and Indian flavour throughout, OD has outdone everything he made on Beneath The Surface. Global Phlowtations' Adlib comes off all right on the track, but the instrumental is more appealing to listen to simply because the beat is so damn fine you hate to hear someone rhyme over it, although, it may have been interesting if the Fellowship had a chance to rock Adlib's beat.
