Night of the Brain

"The Theme"

Known primarily as a techno specialist (using his own name as well as Decay and Super_Collider with Jamie Lidell), Cristian Vogel's next step in an impressive and rather prolific career is anything but what a lot of people would expect. Self-described as "combining electric guitar, drums and bass with computer music techniques and simple song structures," Vogel's new Barcelona-based band Night of the Brain show he's full of even more surprises. While their music may not always expose a complex musical prowess (some songs on their MySpace page sound like an effortless stab at resurrecting the gothy hard rock of Girls Against Boys), "The Theme" explores an upfront love for Krautrock - an endeavour that always requires some kind of endowed noodling and a staggering jazz drummer, which they have. So far, it's the best thing they've done: think Spoon trying their hand at Neu! 75 covers in rehearsal and you're so there. Let's hope this song is a good indication of what to expect from their forthcoming debut Wear the World (out June 4 in Europe).
