Next Music from Tokyo Returns to Canada for 10th Edition

BY Calum SlingerlandPublished Mar 3, 2017

After bringing the best of Japan's indie and underground music scene to Canada in May and October of last year, Next Music from Tokyo has announced the details behind its 10th edition, set to take place in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver this year.

Headlining this spring's instalment of the tour are fan favourites Hyacca, who were also a part of the tour in 2011. The quartet's sound is described as "an equal parts mix of the Bad Brains, My Bloody Valentine, Neu! and Tera Melos," recommended for "fans of post-punk and noise music."

Rounding out the bill are Yukueshirezutsurezure with their fusion of idol music and hardcore, post-punk four-piece the Taupe, technical pop rockers Yubisaki Nohaku and melodic pop-punk outfit Bakyun the everyday.

Since 2010, Next Music from Tokyo has been curated by Toronto's Steven Tanaka, who travels to Japan to scout each year's lineup. His goal is to create a lineup of Japanese bands "that put on a great show without resorting to gimmicks."

As in previous years, four tour dates will make up the tour itinerary, with the bands spending two nights in Toronto before performances in Montreal and Vancouver. Scroll through the schedule to get a taste of this year's lineup in the players below.
