The New Rags

Take Jennie To Brooklyn

BY Michael EdwardsPublished Jul 18, 2007

There has always been a certain coolness to two-piece bands and thanks to the likes of the White Stripes, nobody expects two people to make less noise than a larger group anymore. The real trick, however, is to produce something rather unexpected and the New Rags do just that. With just keyboards and drums, they do an admirable job of creating a damned fine sound, which has hints of Ben Folds and Quasi. The band claim a love of ragtime music as well, although that barely seems to register in their music. With just six songs, Take Jennie To Brooklyn is over far too quickly. That might be its strength, because it doesn’t hang around long enough to get tired or repetitive. Time will tell if an entire album of this will be quite as interesting as this very enjoyable EP.
