Neil Young

'Storytone' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Oct 24, 2014

Neil Young's latest album brings the Canadian songwriting legend together with a 92-piece orchestra and choir. Now, we can hear Storytone in full, as it's streaming ahead of its November 4 release on Reprise Records.

This album consists of two separate versions of the same 10 songs. On the one hand, there's the orchestral half, which was conducted, arranged and co-produced by Michael Bearden and Chris Walden. Young previously talked about recording it live with a single microphone; eventually, he compromised this vision by doing it with multiple microphones, with the tunesmith singing live in the same room.

On the complete opposite end of the sonic spectrum, Young also recorded the 10 tracks as rough-around-the-edges acoustic numbers. These were recorded solo prior to the orchestral versions.

Listen to both versions below. Following Storytone's initial November 4 release, it will arrive on vinyl on December 16.
